This used to be one of the anthems of my youth heh
I even remember the rumors that the members of Industry had died.
Back in the 80s, false rumors would pop up on a regular basis about this or that celebrity dying. I remember being stunned when I heard rumors that Cyndi Lauper had died. Other stars who were victims of these rumors were Moira Kelly and Phoebe Cates. Maybe you remember other rumored deaths.
While searching YouTube for the “State of the Nation” video, I discovered that Industry actually made two videos, but the boat version above is the one shown on MTV. I dunno about you, but it’s the boat version I’m familiar with — anyway, check out the other video below.
By the way, as noted by the person who uploaded the copy of the boat version on YouTube, he just found this video via P2P and the ripped video isn’t completely in synch with the singing. It’s not that out of synch actually — at least not as bad as the dubbing in some Chinese kung fu movies hehe

Hi! I am watching the program on VH1 classics called the Vault and saw the video by indurstry and it totally took me back! I haven’t heard that song since it came out in the 80’s! Do you know anything about the band like where they are from or if they have a full length album? I am trying to get info. but it’s not as easy as I had thought it would be.
Happy Thanksgiving!!!
Sincerely,
Amy

Yes, Industry has a full length album: http://www.last.fm/music/Industry. The real qustion is, “Where can can one find a download of it?” The song “State of the Nation” is readily available for download, but their others songs are nearly impossible to find. I purchased their EP on cassette back in the 80’s and subsequently lost it, so I personally have no qualms about downloading their music. They already got my money. I found that one can purchase used or copied works from Industry at various websites online, but they cost $80 or more!
Anyone have any suggestions?
BTW, thanks for providing the videos.

Dear Amy and Chris: I had no idea that this rarity from ‘83 should be remembered so much and have a following like this. While they remain one of my most favorite obscurities, I have found NO information regarding the band. I have their self-titled EP, bought new in ‘83, that contains 6 songs. I had it transfered very nicely to CD. If you want a copy, get in touch.

Thanks SO much for posting this video and song. I was dating my boyfriend, now husband, and as he was in the US Airforce I used to listen to this song over and over while I was living back in old Blighty!!!. This song reminds me of our first few months of dating! Infact the lyrics are quite appropriate given the men and woman over in the Gulf!!!

Hi, I just want to thank you also for posting this video and song! It seems silly, but I still remember how much this song meant to me when I was a teenager.
I also have a copy of the mini LP (5 songs), but haven’t managed to figure out how to transfer it to CD. Where can I download this song?

Love this song! I re-discovered it on RadioNigel on Shoutcast. They play New Wave, and lots of obscure stuff too.

This is Brian Unger from the band. I happened upon this list after google-ing “State of the Nation” . I’d just like everyone to know that we are working on putting together some previously unreleased material in the near future.
I can’t speak for the Capital Records release which contains “State” but maybe if enough people make some noise maybe we can get them to release a CD version of the full album “Stranger to Stranger.” There is Phillipine version available on Amazon but its way overpriced and to the best of my knowledge it is a bootleg. Anyway we are constructiong various websites at the moment and I’ll leave our email for anyone who would like to get on our mailing list. It’s Industrysongs@optonline.net Thanks for your continued interest in the band after all these years.

This made my day, finding this again!
I loved this song in the ’80’s, and it’s awesome to see that I’m not the only one to remember it. I still have the 45 somewhere…

These guys also had two versions of another single they put out, Still Of The Night. i *know* they put a video out for the song since I saw it on MTV2 back in 2000, when they played every video ever aired by MTV and VH1 up to that point. I’m hoping to run across this video again someday, but no luck yet.
Back to the song… the State Of The Nation version is OK, but there’s another version that kind of reminds me of World’s Apart-era Saga that just RULES. I think it’s the same version they used in the video, but I cannot be sure. Luckily, I have that version of the song (got it from Audiogalaxy YEARS ago) but the quality leaves a bit to be desired.
I’ve uploaded the version I have to http://atari.vg-network.com/industry-stillofthenight.mp3. Anyone know where this version comes from? Brian Unger?
(p.s. Brian Unger: glad to see you’re still around! looking forward to hearing some new old stuff from you guys!)

I have always been a big Industry fan, and I have the Still of the Night video on VHS, in fact I have two slightly different versions of it, one with some added graphics and one without. Once I find them and get them converted for upload, I will get them uploaded.
